LET'S TALK ABOUT SEX...
·
According
to Wikipedia, Intimacy is complex in that its meaning varies from relationship to relationship, and within a given relationship
over time.
· In
some relationships, intimacy is entwined with sex and feelings of closeness may be connected or confused with sexual feelings.
· In
other relationships, intimacy has more to do with shared moments than sexual interactions.
· In
any case, intimacy is linked with feelings of closeness among partners in a relationship.
"Human development is best understood in terms of changing objects of sexual
desire." Sigmund Freud
***This theory comes to life in The Awakening where Edna's changing of objects of sexual desire,
eventually leads to her "Awakening."***
EDNA’
S INTIMATE RELATIONSHIP WITH THE SEA:
Edna has a certain infatuation with the sea. As if it
was a third lover. She uses the sea as an escape when she is depressed or disappointed.
The sea is the one lover of hers that has it all, warmth,
security (homey feeling), passion, history, and it listens to her every thought without any negative response.
She gets a certain amount satisfaction from being in the sea and swimming. Swimming in the sea empowers her, and allows her to become familiar with
her new lack of boundaries.
The reason she is so infatuated with the sea is because
it is the only being that is perfect in her life. She couldn’
t find that perfection in her husband, Robert, or Arobin.
When at the beach, Edna tells Madame Ratignolle, "First
of all, the sight of the water stretching so far away, those motionless sails against the blue sky, made a delicious picture
that I just wanted to sit and look at....I can remember a summer day in Kentucky, of a meadow that seemed as big as the ocean
to the very little girl walking through the grass, which was higher than her waist."
The sea also plays a part in letting her reminisce about
her childhood in the "endless grassy fields.
"
In the end, she makes a choice between lovers and gives
her body and soul to the one lover that she could always trust, the sea.
